Literature Text

It has recently been brought to my attention that more cell phones have been taken away from students for unauthorized use during classroom and school hours.  This is because it is written in our handbooks that cell phone use is strictly prohibited, because it is a means for students to cheat on their homework, class work, and worse yet; their tests.  The cell phone also provides a means to distract the students from the lectures given in the class room as well.  So of course teachers are going to snatch away the devices that the younger generations have seemingly been born with.  Our students have come up with clever ways to use their cell phones in class so that the can have that distinct feel of being included with others.

I think that it is unfair that the students should lose their cell phones just because of their insatiable desire to feel connected at all hours.  So I decided that I would no longer take away their cell phones and I have discovered great benefits.

In letting our students use their phones in class we will have much quieter classrooms, which teachers all know is something so coveted that it is out of reach.  Of course, if the classroom is one of the "lucky" few where reception is none existent; then I must say that this is still out of your reach because we cannot put a cell phone tower right next to your window to give you that peace and quiet.  You will have to deal with the rambunctious children the same as you have always been able to.  I suggest that you trade classroom with a teacher who has a planning period so that you may have that luxury of no interruption by the students.

If the students send out mass texts telling each other what the answers to last night's math assignment, or today's science question or tomorrow's reading test, it will make grading a great deal easier.  Cheating, of course, results in an automatic zero, unless we decide to change that, but the grading will still be easier because all the answers are going to be relatively the same.  Once you finish the first paper you will be able to write the same percentage down from all those other papers- the only variety will come from term papers.

For those unfortunate few that do not possess such an important device to the younger generations, we can always buy those students cell phones that they would have to take care of for all four years of their high school career.  We can charge them with their school fees and they will have to leave the phones behind during the summer months, but at the end of their senior year they can be given the choice to buy the cell phone from the school, or they can just leave it behind and forget that feeling of being connected to all of their ex school mates.

There should be a few rules for the students on the use of their cell phones, we do not want them to get too far out of hand and they do have to learn something.  The first rule is that they will not be allowed to shared term paper ideas; they have to be unique and creative.  Term papers are what give them their grades at the end of the semester, determining whether or not they will pass the class.

The second rule for the students is that they will not be permitted to text answers to the final exams, teachers do have to know whether or not their students have learned something, so on the day of finals, teachers will take all of the cell phones and hold on to them until the test is over.

Finally, should more than fifty percent of the classroom should fail a test, the teachers will have to repeat the chapter until less than fifty percent (which would be everyone will either pass or fail since everyone would get the same grade) receives a passing grade.

The end result, though, is still better than what we have now.  Our students hate us because we take away their connection to the outside world and we give the children zeros when we suspect them to be sending texts when they are supposed to be working.  With permitting cell phone use, we will have happier students and teachers alike.
This is a satirical essay for my english class, I am not overly fond of it, but my friend/peer editor thought that it was pretty good, so here it is.
